Alex Mayernik, (Mount Laurel, NJ) with Coach Baker
Looking Towards the Future of Gettysburg Hockey
August 25, 2015
The 2015-16 is right around the corner and all of the students and new recruits will be back on campus within the next week, all gearing up for the new season. Gettysburg looks to continue to rebuild their program with young talent. A common theme even in the NHL recently has been focused on top recruits. This year's NHL draft was one of the most anticipated in history with the two top picks in young phenoms Jack Eichel and Connor McDavid. Eichel a promising American from Boston University and McDavid who played in the Ontario Hockey League with the Erie Otters, a team the Bullets got to watch play only five years ago, just before McDavid's arrival.
Both stars are expected to be franchise players for their respective NHL teams, bringing their programs to the top of the league. Gettysburg is hoping for similar results. New recruits and prospects are encouraged to contact the coaching staff to show interest in Gettysburg College and the hockey program. One young player has done that recently.
Alex Mayernik, 15, has some time before graduating from high school in Mount Laurel, NJ, but has expressed great interest in Gettysburg College. Recently Coach Terry Baker had a chance to watch Alex play at the University of Delaware summer tournament.
Alex Mayernik will graduate from high school in 2018. A talented left-handed center who plays for the Jaguars Midget Minor AA U15 / U16 team out of the Igloo in Mount Laurel, New Jersey. Alex also plays in the Also plays in the NJYHL and EJEPL. An excellent student with a 4.0 GPA, would make a great fit for Gettysburg College's tough cirriculum.
"College hockey has always been my dream and I will do whatever it takes to make it a reality and help that team win a championship," Alex said to Coach Baker after his tournament. "I strive to do the best of my ability in the classroom with taking some of the hardest classes that I can and use that same mentality on the ice. I want to be the best that I can be."
"I was very impressed by this young man," Coach Baker exclaimed. "He shows a genuine interest in Gettysburg and meeting him validated that he would be a fine addition to our school and our team in a few years."
Coach Baker looks to continue to strengthen Gettysburg's hockey program with players like Alex.
