#10 Captain Joe Chiarino battles in front
Topping the Mount
September 27, 2015
Saturday night’s game at York Ice Arena with division rival Mount St. Mary’s saw the 2-0 Bullets come into their third contest a little short-handed as far as players are concerned, but not short-handed in ability and desire. It didn’t take G’burg long to get on the scoreboard as captain Joe Chiarino put the Bullets up 1-0 52 seconds into the first period. Less than five minutes later, assistant captain Colin Hetherington launched a bomb from the point that hit the back of the net as he scored the second goal unassisted. Five minutes after that, senior assistant captain Kyle Chipman got his first of the year on a nice one-timer in the slot assisted by Hetherington and #13 John Baum. Mount St. Mary’s picked up a goal at the five and a half minute mark of the first to close out the period with Gettysburg up 3-1.
The second period scoring was all Gettysburg. Nine minutes in, John Baum got his first of the night with an assist from line mate Kyle Chipman. Four minutes later, it was Chipman again for his second for the night, assisted by #10 Joe Chiarino. With time running down in the second, John Baum cashed in with his second tally of the night with only four seconds remaining on the clock.
The third period scoring was two goals from Mount St. Mary’s that were results of odd man rushes due to an overworked Bullets team. However, the team stepped up defensively and shut the door the remaining nine minutes of the game to preserve a hard-earned 6-3 victory. Kudos to a three man defense corps consisting of Colin Hetherington, Chris Williams and Jacob Smalley, who really stepped up their game, and another strong performance from starting sophomore goalie Tom Pelchat. Next Saturday, the Bullets travel to DC to face Catholic University.
